In this comprehensive digital art class, we’ll start with the fundamentals of anatomy and posing, build our way through character design principles, and finish with polished, professional-quality illustrations. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a developing artist looking to strengthen your foundations, this course will guide you through every stage of crafting compelling, visually striking characters. This class is all about understanding why characters look the way they do, not just copying references.
Class Time:
12 hours of learning!
We’ll begin with the structure of the human body: core proportions, simplified forms, and how anatomy affects movement. You’ll learn how to break the body down into easy-to-draw shapes, how to avoid common proportion mistakes, and how to use gesture and pose to communicate emotion and personality.
Once you’re comfortable with anatomy and posing, we’ll step into the creative world of character design. We’ll explore silhouettes, visual storytelling, color palettes, and the “show don’t tell” principles that make a design feel instantly readable and memorable. You’ll also get practical guidance on navigating digital tools. I’ve worked with all kinds of drawing tablets over the years. Screen tablets, non-screen tablets, mobile tablets, and I’ll show you how to feel confident with your device no matter what you use. We’ll cover common software workflows, brush setup, layers, and techniques to speed up your drawing process without sacrificing quality.
As your instructor, I bring over a decade of drawing experience as well as an advanced diploma in Game Art & Animation. My background in both digital illustration and character-focused game development allows me to teach not just how to draw, but how to think like a character artist. My goal is to make intimidating concepts feel approachable, and to help you build a strong artistic foundation you can use across any style or project. Throughout the class, you’ll complete a structured series of exercises and projects designed to build your skills step-by-step.
We’ll end by applying everything you’ve learned to create polished final pieces. You’ll have the option to develop a detailed character sheet, a dynamic splash illustration, or an interaction piece that shows your characters in action, something you can proudly include in a portfolio.
By the end of this course, you’ll not only understand how to draw stronger characters, you’ll understand how to design them. You’ll walk away with new skills, new confidence, and professional-quality artwork that reflects your personal style.
