Each week will focus on two artists. Week one will begin with the German Expressionists, Kathe Kollwitz and Franz Marc, two artists who epitomize the theme of this class. Week two will address the French painters Berthe Morisot and Rosa Bonheur. In spite of the obstacles placed on female artists during the 19th century, these painters greatly excelled. Week three will focus on the German performer and writer, Hugo Ball, and the Irish writer, James Joyce. In challenging the limitations of logic, these two artists exposed the possibilities that exist in nonsense. In week four, we will highlight the work of the German painter, Hans Hartung, and the Latvian-American artist, Vija Celmins.
My name is Butch Merigoni. I'm a drummer, performer, painter, and art history professor. In leading students through the history of art, I also emphasize the uncompromising lives of the individuals who created this work. In many ways, the artwork is a small part of a courageously determined life. This course highlights the power of the human will.
